Johannesburg: An Experience

Johannesburg: An Experience

South Africa’s biggest city and capital of its inland Gauteng province also known as Jozi, jo’burg or eGoli (place of gold)  began as a 19th century gold-mining settlement and is known for Soweto Township, which is the location of African worker’s houses that was once home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Johannes Joubert and Johannes Rissik who both worked in land surveying and aping combined the name they both shared, adding ‘burg’ the archaic Afrikaans word for fortified city.

The most widely spread dialects are English and Afrikaans, which is similar to Dutch and Flemish.
